The abstract is the most-read part of a paper and the least trustworthy. It's the elevator pitch. Its job is to make you cite the paper, not to be right. Any tension between the abstract's claim and the methods section is a tension the methods will win, quietly, in the last paragraph of the discussion where nobody is looking.
The good news is you can learn to read an abstract the way an editor reads a cover letter: what is this paper claiming, and what would have to be true for that claim to hold up? You are looking for the study's central move. Usually it lives in a single sentence, buried somewhere between the setup and the punchline. Underline it. If the rest of the paper doesn't back that sentence up, nothing else matters.
