Choose the Right Autel Diagnostic Scan Tool

Four Autel tablets. Every shop asks which one they need. This guide breaks down the real differences so you buy the tool that fits your work, not the one with the biggest sticker.

Why This Guide Exists

We get asked all the time, what is the difference between these Autel tablets? Which ones can do ADAS calibrations? Which one do I actually need? The truth is, all four can handle ADAS. Where they differ is diagnostic depth, programming capability, Tesla coverage, and which Autel ADAS frame they pair with.

This guide walks through each tablet, calls out the real-world gotchas we hit on the phones every week, and gives you a decision framework so you buy the tool you need instead of the one with the biggest sticker price.

MS906Max

Entry tier, starter

The cost-effective starter. Great fit for glass shops and mobile calibration techs.

What it does well

  • Full diagnostic coverage across most domestic, Asian, and European makes
  • Static and dynamic ADAS calibration with the MA600
  • AutoAuth compatible for security gateway management (FCA, Nissan, Mercedes)
  • Includes the wireless V200 VCI
  • Cost-effective versus the MS909S2 or Ultra S2

Where it falls short

  • No Tesla coverage, at all
  • No J2534 pass-thru, so OEM programming and flashing is off the table
  • Advanced coding is limited
  • Only pairs with the MA600 and IA800 frames, no IA700, IA900, or IA1000
  • Slower processor and RAM, noticeable on large scans or heavy bi-directional work

Best fit for

  • Glass shops and mobile techs who need calibrations but not deep diagnostics
  • Shops that don't work on Teslas and don't do OEM programming
  • Secondary tablet to complement an existing MS909S2 or Ultra S2
  • Budget-conscious shops pairing with the MA600 for basic ADAS

MS909S2

Pro tier, diagnostic sweet spot

The diagnostic sweet spot. Where most serious repair shops land.

What it does well

  • Full topology mapping for efficient system overview
  • Advanced module coding, including online coding and special functions
  • Ships with the MaxiFlash VCI, J2534 pass-thru and OEM programming supported
  • Remote Expert access for OEM scan and programming subcontracting
  • Tesla diagnostics supported (Tesla-compatible adapter cable sold separately)
  • Pairs with the MA600, IA700, and IA800 for ADAS calibration
  • Compact form factor, easy to take on the road

Where it falls short

  • Not compatible with the IA900 or IA1000, no wheel alignment integration
  • Slower processor than the Ultra S2
  • No split-screen or heavy multitasking

Best fit for

  • Shops doing deeper diagnostics and programming
  • Shops that need OEM software solutions and Remote Expert
  • Operators working on Teslas
  • Anyone future-proofing their diagnostic setup without going all the way to Ultra S2

Side note on the MS919: The MS919 is essentially the MS909S2 bundled with the MaxiFlash VCMI (the "M" is measurement) instead of the standard VCI. The VCMI adds oscilloscope and heavier electrical diagnostic tools. If you don't need scoping, the MS909S2 is the better value.

MS Ultra S2

Flagship, top of the line

The top-of-the-line workhorse. Built for high-efficiency workflows and full alignment coverage.

What it does well

  • Fastest processor and most RAM of any Autel tablet, snappy even under load
  • Split-screen multitasking, run diagnostics and repair info side by side
  • Compatible with the MA600, IA700, IA900, and IA1000, full ADAS and alignment support
  • Wheel alignment procedures when paired with the IA900 or IA1000
  • Remote Expert and Tesla diagnostics supported (Tesla adapter sold separately)
  • Autel AI Assistant (Maxwell) for guided workflows and DTC assistance
  • Expanded diagnostic toolset, including Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI), module pinging, motor true speed display, live data fusion, custom trigger settings, and EV lab scope enhancements

Where it falls short

  • Highest price tag in the lineup

Best fit for

  • Operators needing advanced tools for EVs, ADAS, and deep diagnostics
  • Shops running the IA900 or IA1000 and wanting a tablet that keeps pace
  • Power users who value smart features, expanded data access, and future-proof capability

Frame Pairing Cheat Sheet

Pick your frame first

The frame you pick often decides which tablet you can run, so it helps to think about them together.

MA600

Mobile ADAS. Works with all four tablets.

IA700

Modular ADAS. Works with MS909S2 and Ultra S2.

IA800

Legacy standard frame. Works with MS906Max and MS909S2.

IA900

All-systems ADAS plus wheel alignment. Ultra S2 only.

IA1000

Automated ADAS plus wheel alignment. Ultra S2 only.

How to Choose

Match tool to use case

Glass shop or mobile calibration

The MS906Max paired with the MA600 is almost always right. Static and dynamic calibration, without the diagnostic and programming features you will not use.

General repair shop with programming, coding, and occasional Tesla work

The MS909S2 is the sweet spot. Handles Teslas with the adapter, Remote Expert access, no Ultra price tag.

Wheel alignment and ADAS calibration in the same bay

You need the MS Ultra S2. It pairs with both the IA900 and IA1000. Nothing else in Autel's lineup gets you both.

Fastest, deepest, most future-proof platform

The MS Ultra S2. AI Assistant, expanded diagnostics, split-screen multitasking, and every current frame supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions we get on the phones

Can any of these tablets do ADAS calibrations?

Yes, all can. The MS906Max is limited to the MA600 and IA800. The MS909S2 adds the IA700. The Ultra S2 adds the IA900 and IA1000.

Which tablets work on Teslas?

The MS909S2 and Ultra S2 support Tesla diagnostics. You need a Tesla-compatible adapter cable, which is sold separately. The MS906Max does not support Tesla at all.

Can I calibrate a Tesla without an Autel tablet?

Technically yes. Tesla lets you run the calibration through the center console. The advantage of using the MS909S2 or Ultra S2 with the adapter is that you get a proper Autel pre and post scan report on top of the calibration, which matters for collision documentation.

What's the difference between the VCI and VCMI?

The VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) is Autel's standard J2534 device. The VCMI (Vehicle Communication and Measurement Interface) adds oscilloscope and electrical measurement capability. The MS919 ships with the VCMI, the MS909S2 ships with the VCI.

Is the MS919 just an MS909S2 with a scope?

Essentially yes. The MS919 bundles the MaxiFlash VCMI instead of the standard VCI. If you do not need heavy electrical diagnostics, the MS909S2 is the better value.

Can I use the MS906Max on the IA900?

No. The MS906Max only pairs with the MA600 and IA800. If you want to run the IA900, you need the Ultra S2.

What's the difference between the legacy MS Ultra and the Ultra S2?

The Ultra S2 has a faster processor, more RAM, split-screen multitasking, the AI Assistant, expanded diagnostic tools, and IA1000 compatibility. The legacy Ultra was compatible with the IA900 but not the IA1000.
