Why This Guide Exists
There is a lot of confusion and not enough clarity when it comes to OEM software. Every manufacturer has its own portals, subscription types, tools, and requirements. Shops everywhere are asking the same questions. What do I need for service information? What about diagnostics? What is required for programming? Which VCI will actually work?
The information exists, but it is scattered across dozens of OEM sites and usually buried behind pages of menus, PDFs, and support articles. We wanted to cut through that and create a single resource the community can rely on.
For each OEM, we break down:
- What the software is and what it is used for
- Where to access it (official portals and links)
- What it costs (day, month, and annual pricing)
- Which VCIs work, and any ADAS, calibration, or programming notes you should know
BMW / Mini / Rolls-Royce

- BMW's primary diagnostic and service platform
- Handles full system diagnostics, live data, calibration, coding, service resets, and guided repair workflows
- Replaced the older ISTA-P platform for most modern applications
- Requires online login for VIN decoding, module access, and programming file downloads
ISTA-P, Integrated Service Technical Application (Programming)
- Legacy programming platform for older vehicles (2008 and below)
- Handles module programming and coding
- Outdated and rarely used, nearly all modern vehicles have transitioned to ISTA-D for diagnostics and programming
- Still available for legacy support on older BMW models

Software: ODIS (Diagnostics & Programming) + Erwin (Service Information)
Volkswagen Group vehicles (VW, Audi, and Lamborghini) rely on two separate OEM systems:
- ODIS: the official diagnostics and programming suite
- Erwin: the official service information portal (repair manuals, wiring, ADAS procedures, and more)
Most shops will need both to perform proper ADAS calibrations, diagnostics, and module programming.
ODIS, Offboard Diagnostic Information System
- Unified diagnostic, service, and programming suite for Volkswagen Group brands, including VW, Audi, and Lamborghini
- Covers diagnostics, coding, module programming, immobilizer functions, and guided fault finding (GFF)
- Online-only platform, all functions require an active internet connection
- Modern and intuitive interface, widely regarded as one of the better-designed European OEM tools

Separate websites, but a single user login works across both brands. The same account provides access to service information, diagnostic software downloads, and programming tools.

- Right-to-Repair version of Xentry for aftermarket use
- PC-based, supports J2534 pass-thru devices
- Full diagnostics, limited online coding and calibration versus the dealer suite
- License is hardware-locked to a single device via MAC address and Access Key
- Coverage focus: approximately 2018 and newer
